The easy explanation is that meteorites are rocks that have landed on earth.  Meteors are space rocks that are still floating around in space.  To be more technical meteoroids are in space, and meteors are just outside of the earth's atmosphere, but not quite out far enough to be a noid.

So a space rock can be all three: First it starts out as a meteoroid, floating around aimlessly in space.  Our meteoroid is small, smaller than the asteroid; it's big brother.

Our meteoroid is floating around, but then it goes off course and starts heading for earth.  It's heating up and hits the atmosphere.  It just turned into a meteor.  As it keeps going, it's large enough that it doesn't burn away upon entry to earth, and crash lands into the desert of Arizona.

It is now a meteorite.  Hurry up young hunter, and go get it!

This past week, from southern Wisconsin to central Missouri and northern Iowa a meteor was spotted in the sky. Claims it was everything from a Biblical sign, to UFO's to top secret government weapons tests have been claimed, but this confirms it was nothing more than a meteor that has entered the atmosphere and landed.

As I mentioned in the previous article, Where To Find Meteorites, occasionally you can see a falling star that lands on earth, and if you go after it, there is a chance you may find it.

Geologists at the University of Wisconsin, confirmed it had a fusion crust. The fusion crust occurs from the super heat the rock endures when entering the atmosphere. The geologist also suggests the space rock may have come from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. News courtesy Yahoo.

First off let's discuss O. Richard Norton. He is definitely the most qualified expert of his time to write a book on meteorites. His credentials include a degree from UCLA in astronomy, and being an apprentice to the well known Professor Leonard. He worked for many years in Reno, Nevada at the Fleischmann's Planetarium.

Some specific details about the book include that it is an amazing 446 pages with an index, glossary, resources and bibliography that are generously cross-referenced. This man has crossed his t's and dotted his i's.

Meteorites have fallen everywhere on this earth. Unfortunately, this doesn't help if you are specifically going out to find meteorites. So, to have better luck on your hunt, use our guide on how to identify meteorites, and then follow me to these regions of the world:

• Dry Lake Beds - devoid of brush, trees, and wildlife, rocks and meteorites stick out like sore thumbs.  Easy to spot, and you can cover more ground quickly
• Deserts - Same as the dry lake bed, except there is more brush and trees, so this can make the hunt more difficult.  To help in the hunt, make sure to bring a metal detector, or a magnet on a stick.
• Craters - A crater was created by a large meteorite (duh!), so there is a chance that there are still chunks of the meteorite or meteorites.  The only downside is that over time the meteorites have decayed or rusted, weakening the chance of finding a good specimen.  Still, your chances are greater here then in random locations.
• Fresh Meteorite Fallings -  In the rare chance you see a meteor near your area go in for a crash landing, you can try to find and locate it.
• Meteor showers - to find these fallings, they often happen with meteor showers, so look up online or listen to the news for special times of the year when these showers occur, and if you are lucky, may see one enter the atmosphere in your area.

These tips will get you closer to the find, but still read up and learn what you can about these space rocks.  Good luck hunting!

To identify a meteorite rock, you need to know the general characteristics of them. These include being attracted to magnets, having a fusion crust, sometimes having pits or craters, random in shape, does it rust?, and does it seem unusually dense or have a greater mass for its size?

First look at the appearance of the rock. Most meteorites are either black, grey, or rusting. If the meteorite has split upon impact look at the outer edge on the cut side. There should be a darker ring. This forms when it burns through the atmosphere and then hardens. Its called the fusion crust.

Next, test if it is magnetic. Using any magnet, does the magnet attach to it. If so you may have a moon rock.

What is the shape? Meteorites are never square or round. They are random in shape and most often have rounded corners. Meteorites usually have what look like tons of craters in the surface.

Are there cracks or grains on the crust? Does it look like it has rusted?

Finally, does it have a thicker density than a normal rock? Heft it up and down and if it just seems unusually heavy for its size, you may possibly have a worth meteorite.

In the end seek out an expert meteorite hound or professor to get an assay and appraisal.

First, we need to know the properties of meteorites, ie they are metal, or at least have some metal content in them one way or the other. Few earth rocks have metal in them, although there are some, so it is easy to figure that you need some magnets to detect the rocks.

But where to get large enough magnets at a reasonable price. You can't just go out and buy large magnets.

You can find magnets ranging from the size of a coffee coaster to the size of a dinner plate in stereo speakers. But it is still not cost effective to buy brand new speakers. So go to the thrift store, or to a garage sale and pick up some speakers for the cheapest price you can find. The speakers do not even need to work. I usually use two speakers but its your preference or however much speakers you have on hand.

Next, you need either a stick, a cane, or whatever. It should comfortably touch the ground from holding it in your hands, so 2.5 to 4 feet is probably sufficient. If you can find a light metal rod, I have found these to be best as you can just stick the magnets to it, with no further modification. If a wood cane is all you have, secure the magnets with twine, screws or whatever way is easiest for you.

That's it. Although, archaic, this detector will attach to moon rocks, and help you in your search for these elusive space rocks. For further modifications, wrap plastic around the magnets, to easily remove black sand and rocks when done.

This meteorite is often confused with the Steve Arnold meteorite.  This meteorite was found in Kiowa City, Kansas by famous meteorite hunter, Steve Arnold.  The largest meteorite in the US weighs three-quarters of a ton, and is made mostly of pallasite.

The discovery of this moon rock brought Steve Arnold instant fame and currently stars in the Discovery TV Show, "Meteorite Men", where he and his partner in crime hunt meteorites and give them to Arizona Universities for further study.

Pallasites are one of the rarer meteorites, with being only 1% of all meteorites found.  They are known as a stony-iron meteorite, for their ratio of stone versus iron.

There are many other well known meteors in the world, but these two space rocks are among the biggest.

First, and one of the hardest parts is finding out who in tarnation owns the private land you want to scout and hunt meteorites on.  Your best resources will be on the internet.  A good place to start is http://www.privatelandownernetwork.org/yellowpages/.  This place just touches the surface of land ownership, but often has info about public lands, and conservation lands owned by groups and organizations.  These lands usually have stricter laws, and may require a permit.

The next best thing to do is perform a specific search on the search engines like Google or Bing.  The search you should perform is something like "(Your State and/or County) Private Land Ownership".  This will give you government organizations that can give you publicly available information including maps about who owns what.  An example is something like the state of Montana's Public and Private Land Ownership.  For a small fee a map can be printed and sent to you based upon county.

This should give you the information you need, but contact information may not exist or be out of date.  This is when you should use the Yellowpages or similar information to track down the owner.

Once the owner is located it is customary to give them a call or a letter in the mail(with your contact info).  When calling them, be polite, give your name and exactly what you intend to do.  After introducing yourself then ask permission to hunt on their land with a guarantee that you will leave the property unharmed, and in better condition than you left it.  Most people will allow you to hunt for meteorites, and will want to know more about it.  Be prepared to tell them why you think there are meteorites on their property.

Some owners may also want to be compensated if you make money on your find.  It never hurts to give a kickback for the owner's grand gesture of letting you hunt on their property.  Just make sure the terms are handled up front, in writing in possible(gauge the person by conversation on whether this seems necessary or not), and let them know that meteorites are rare and there is a large possibility that you will not find anything.

Another good gesture is to invite the owner along.  Some will go, and it is a rare opportunity to share your passion with other receptive participants.

Lastly, after your search,  make sure to thank the landowner, by calling them or sending a letter in the mail with a small gift such as a giftcard, or a meteorite.  Doing these things will lead to years of goodwill and many meteorite hunting opportunities.
